Happy August to all, we are especially excited to share this month’s newsletter because August is
National Wellness Month! National Wellness Month was created to highlight the importance of self- care, managing stress and promoting healthy routines. Within that, August 15th is National Relaxation Day which has the goal to encourage everyone to take time from their busy lifestyles and recuperate and rejuvenate themselves. Research has shown that not only can stress be detrimental to mental and physical health, but also that self-care can help to manage stress and promote happiness! The middle segment of our newsletter includes a list of healthy habits and self-care tips that anyone can try. At the end of the month on August 31st it will be International Overdose Awareness Day- this day is an opportunity to do more to promote recovery and learn about the prevention of overdose. One of the best ways to support the recovery mindset is by ending the stigmas that surround mental health and addiction struggles, and one way to do that is by using person-centered language (as it promotes nonjudgmental terminology). For example, by replacing a stigmatizing term like “addict” with a neutral phrase like “person with substance use disorder”, we can center the person instead of defining them by their condition! If you or someone you love is struggling with substance use or at risk of overdose please call the Mental Health Help line at 9-8-8 or reach out to us for support and resources.
